Kochi

By Sachindra Rajbansi

I remember growing up, as a family we always went on vacations during winter to different parts of India. Our vacation mostly used to be sight seeing, famous temples, forts, monuments, national parks, village towns, and cities, of course for shopping.

This time it was different. It was just me and my father. As far as I have known him he has been a big travel buff. He has travelled all around the world and almost every parts of India except Madhya Pradesh. A bit of passion for travel in me is because of him.

I was really excited and looking forward to a father son trip to Kochi. It was a 48 hr long train ride to Kochi (Ernakulam). Not a very memorable train journey but we made it. Fort Cochi is a quite little fishing town with rich history. You still can feel the past very much present in everything around the place. The old Dutch  and Portuguese architecture, the century old Chinese fishing net, beautiful churches, quite street, the back waters, smell of spices, food, people and their relaxed manners makes the place feel like it is still stuck in those yester years. Capturing the place was very soothing. I was throughly enjoying.

After exploring the Fort for two days, my father felt we had nothing more to do as most of the sightseeing was covered. He was now anxious to get back to Delhi. But for me the place was just opening up. Their was still so much to explore. But we had to cut the travel short and he’d back to Delhi. I realized that though my father was the one that planted this urge of traveling in me but the definition of travel is totally different between us. I feel while traveling, everybody gets to see the place, but to feel the place is something else. So I promised myself to come back to Fort Cochi and finish what we started.
